Prior to blowing, the glass is heated in a furnace to approximately 2,000 degrees, rendering it malleable. The process continues by inserting the blowpipe into the furnace and rotating it within the molten glass until a sufficient mass, known as a 'gob,' adheres to the tip.

The next stage involves marvering: rolling the molten glass on a flat steel slab known as a marver. This tool is essential for shaping the glass and regulating its surface temperature. Subsequently, the piece is alternated between the marver and the glory hole—a reheating chamber designed to restore the glass's malleability

Adding color

To impart color and design, the molten glass is dipped into frit (crushed colored glass). The intense heat causes the frit to fuse instantly to the main body. Once bonded, the piece is returned to the marver for another round of rolling to integrate the color and refine the shape.

Blowing the glass

To achieve the final form and dimensions, air is introduced through the blowpipe, inflating the molten glass into a bubble. For this critical step, the blowpipe is rested on a steel yoke (or stand) to ensure stability. The artisan then blows steadily into the pipe while simultaneously rotating it to maintain symmetry. Throughout this phase, the glass must be frequently returned to the glory hole for reheating, as the expansion process causes rapid heat loss.

Removing the glass and cooling the glass

The final forming step involves detaching the glass from the blowpipe. Using a pair of steel tongs known as jacks, the artisan scores the neck of the vessel while rotating the pipe. This creates a stress line that allows the piece to separate cleanly with a single, sharp tap.

Immediately after, the finished piece is transferred to an annealing oven (or lehr) using heat-resistant gloves. Here, the glass undergoes a controlled cooling process over several hours. This step is critical, as glass is highly susceptible to thermal shock and would likely shatter if exposed to rapid temperature changes.
