The glassblowing process begins by heating glass in a furnace to 2000°F, making it malleable. A blowpipe is inserted to gather a "gob" of molten glass, which is then rolled on a flat metal slab called a marver to control its shape and temperature. The glass is frequently returned to a reheating chamber, known as a glory hole, to maintain workability.
For design, the hot glass is dipped in crushed colored glass, which fuses instantly. After rolling again on the marver, the artist places the pipe on a steel stand and blows while rotating, expanding the glass into a bubble. Continuous reheating is crucial, as blowing cools the material rapidly.
To finish, steel tools called jacks separate the bottom of the piece from the blowpipe. A solid tap releases the trophy. Finally, wearing heat-resistant gloves, the artist places the glass into an annealing oven. This allows it to cool slowly over several hours, preventing breakage caused by rapid temperature changes. This meticulous handmade process ensures each piece is unique, with slight natural variations in size and color.
